The Second Baby

Easy, laid back, mellow...that's my baby boy.

I think this little guy is very lucky.

His Mama and Daddy have already been through the newborn phase, and we are much more laid back and prepared this time around. I think Matt and I were pretty mellow with Case, but we definitely had no idea what to expect. I mean, we read the books, we took the classes. We soaked up as much advice as we could from our family and friends - but until you are a parent...until you experience it is so hard to imagine. Until you hold that sweet brand new baby in your arms, until you survive the torturous but beautiful few weeks of getting to know your baby, until you learn how to live without sleep, until you just look at each other and just laugh when the baby has spit up on your shirt for the third time, or pooped five times in the the last hour, until you figure out how to change the diaper just so, so that your baby boy won't pee on the wall - or his face (Yes, that totally happened.) until you look into those beautiful eyes and your baby smiles back at you...you just don't get how wonderfully amazing it actually is.

But this time, with Rhett, we get it.
We knew the deal, we were prepared. We were SO excited and ready!
I feel like everything has been so much easier. My recovery after delivering was easier, nursing has been easier, even the lack of sleep has been much easier to handle. With Case I used to BEG Matt to get up just once for me during the night, and I even talked him into letting me sleep at Mom and Dad's one night so I could get more than 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep. (Though it didn't work out like I had hoped, I just laid there awake missing my boys like crazy.)
With Rhett, I just do it. I even crave the alone time in the middle of the night with him. The days are so busy with my toddler, and our huge dog, and lunch, and snacks and nap time, cartoons, blocks, matchbox cars, trains, laundry, dishes etc. I just love tip toeing down the hallway during the night and scooping Rhett into my arms to nurse him and just stare at him while the house is quiet and the rest of the boys are sleeping. Now don't get me wrong, every single night hasn't been total bliss, I've had my moments of moaning and groaning, and mornings of coffee because I have no idea how I could get through the morning without caffeine. I've had my share of rough moments during the day as well. It's definitely not always easy balancing between a newborn and an energetic toddler. We are all figuring it out together. :)

Rhett is already THE MAN when it comes to sleeping though! Within just the first few weeks he gave us a few nights of sleeping eight hours straight! Now that he is six weeks old, he's consistently sleeping between 5-8 hour stretches every night. He'll wake up to eat, then go back down for a few more hours. It has been amazing!

Rhett is just so amazing. Last night, I had just laid him down in his crib, called Matt into his room with me, and we just stared at him. We are so lucky to have him in our lives. He is such a sweet baby, and his first smiles are melting our hearts! We are so in love with both of our babies, the first and the second. :)
